- Carnatic Music, the South Indian system of Indian classical music is a highly evolved system with scope for both improvisations as well as rending the thousands of compositions of past masters. This is a musical system that is perhaps unparalleled anywhere in the World, in the variety of melodic and rhythmic patterns. It has a very structured learning process, that when properly adhered, prepares a student for any kind of music. In addition, it is a wonderful mind training system that makes the mind more alert, improve cognitive skills and memory retention. In our experience, students who have had solid training here do exceptionally well in academics. Maragatham accepts students after they have gone through the first stage lessons and have some basic understanding of talam and sruti.
- Maragatham started learning Carnatic music from a very young age, winning many prizes as a small child. Her teachers include, the late Shri SRV Sarma, Smt Maragatham Ramaswamy, Shri Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman, and Shri DK Nagarajan (brother of Smt DK Pattamal and Shri DK Jayaraman). She specializes in both Sanskrit and Tamil compositions. She continues to teach students in the Chicago area and is involved in many musical activities. She has been singing the Thiruppavai compositions with her students during the month of Margahzhi at the two main Chicago temples for some years now. At the annual Thanga Murugan Vizha she revives the old devotional Murugan songs sung by various artistes such as Sulamangalam Sisters, Bangalore Ramani Ammal, etc.
